SILENT VENOM

[Silent Venom]
Plot:Deep in the jungle of a remote island in the Pacific lives a new breed of mutant snake. Dr. Andrea Swanson and her research assistant Jake have been studying the species in a top secret military experiment to develop the ultimate anti-toxin. But when tensions rise with the Chinese military, Admiral Bradley Wallace quickly evacuates the island. The only way home is an old, decommissioned submarine on its final voyage to its new home in Taiwan. Wallace decides to put Lt. Commander James O'Neill at the helm, a hardened pro facing forced retirement... and he is less than pleased to be "babysitting" his two new guests. But they're not alone. Andrea was ordered to bring some of the experimental snakes back to the mainland - and worse, Jake has smuggled some of the deadlier mutated snakes on board, including a giant diamondback.

When a Chinese vessel attacks the sub, the vicious creatures are released from their secure containers and begin to stalk the crew members one by one. Trapped two hundred feet below sea level with no way out, the sub's skeleton crew find themselves attacked... in the galley, torpedo room, shower, and control room. The snakes are hungry and vicious... but nothing can prepare the crew for the terror that awaits them when the diamondback escapes its captivity. Growing in size and ferocity with each meal... the mutated beast is seemingly unstoppable. O'Neill and Andrea become unlikely allies in the fight to keep the deadly snakes at bay as Wallace worries about an international incident as they try to save the sub from the enemy vessels tracing their every move.

Cast: Luke Perry, Krista Allen, Tom Berenger, Louis Mandylor, Anthony Tyler Quinn, John L. Curtis, Robert Catrini, David Andriole, Sam Scarber, Travis Dixon, Haran Jackson, Oliver Rayon, Bill J. Stevens, Gerald Webb, T. Ryan Mooney.

My Thoughts:People fucking around with nature again.

Review:Okay so call me naive, for thinking a killer snake movie with cgi serpents would put forth any merit. I'm naive, I'll admit it. But a movie with Krista Allen and Luke Perry in it had to be worth something right? I mean it's a B-movie for crying out loud, and getting Perry and Allen into a B-movie can be considered a victory. Not an A-grade movie, but a B-grade killer snake movie?

Absolutely!! However, while Perry and Allen's characters were in the lead male and female roles respectively (they kind of had to be in a movie starring Tom Berenger), they don't lead this movie to the promise land. Instead, they kind of just take the money and run. "Silent Venom" follows a military scientist named Andrea Swanson (Allen) stationed on an island, conducting research in snake venoms by cross-breeding snakes.

The plan here is to create an anti-virus to any chemical weapons U.S. soldiers may encounter on the battlefield. The project gets shut down however, and so Dr. Swanson and her assistant board a U.S. sub, headed by Lt. Commander James O'Neill to head back home. They gas a few of the snakes before leaving the island, but foolishly take a few of the test specimens onto the sub with them.

A small detail they don't tell Commander O'Neill about. So, at this point, the snakes are pretty much wrapped up tight, until some bumbling idiot accidentally releases them. That's when they start biting numerous crew members, infecting them with a deadly toxin. And so the horror begins, for the subs occupants, and the viewer. "Silent Venom" breaks down into just another killer cgi-snake flick. Think "Snakes On A Sub".

That's pretty much what it is. It seems a lot of these killer snake movies think they can replicate "Snakes On A Plane", because that movie used cgi snakes, and took place inside an inescapable vessel. But that movie had Sam Jackson, Julianna Marguilles, and many other seasoned actors. This movie has Krista Allen, Luke Perry, and some no name people. Perry isn't nearly on Sam's level, and Allen, albeit hot, cannot be asked to carry such a poor film like this by herself.

Especially when she's not toting a gun ala Tuffy in "Feast". This movie has absolutely no merit because it recycles the same old storyline of U.S. government experiment gone wrong, and it also offers no action, suspense, or thrills. We just sit back and wait for the next CGI snake to bite some dude. Big friggin whoop! Then of course near the end, we come to the obligatory scene where the Doctor manages to convince the angry Lt. Commander with her hotness and sincerity that she didn't mean for the killer snakes to escape, he believes her, and thus they have to partner up to shut down the deadly vipers.

Did anyone expect things to turn out any differently? I sure didn't. And if you did, then you need to watch more horror movies. This film is everything but unpredictable, and to top it all off, the snake-attack scenes aren't even funny or remotely entertaining. No one gets bitten in a hilarious, dark-humored sort of way. And if a killer-cgi snake movie can't offer up some funny death scenes or attack moments, then what truly is it's purpose?

I have to admit though, Luke Perry and Krista Allen did the best they could under these circumstances, and I'm sure they were happy when they cashed their checks which they received for agreeing to star in this atrocity. Atleast they got paid, in some countries, they wouldn't have. A scary thought when you decide to attach "Silent Venom" to your acting resume. "Silent Venom" is probably as bad as killer cgi snake movies get. Even "Anaconda 3' and "Anaconda 4" were better than this junk.

Positives:Krista Allen eye candy, and the end credits.

Negatives:Lame snakes, lame script, lame plot, overall lame movie.
