Shankar B, has picked up the decade and a half old Hollywood film Ghost to give Sandalwood his first contribution. Though he claims the credit for the story as well, Antharathma resembles the original too closely. However the Kannada film is neatly made and comes across as a fresh take on ghosts and spirits that in our films at least are used only to scare audience.
The ghosts, particularly, the protagonist played by Mithun Tejaswi is all human in its endeavours. It is entertaining to watch ghosts with their own set of problems and how they interact with those still alive.
Shyam, (Mithun Tejaswi) a bank employee suddenly finds that Rs 14 crore has been credited to his account due to the mistake of some shady elements. He is shot dead by an assailant seeking the password of his account. Shyam becomes a ghost and finds that his wife's life is now in danger. But as a ghost he has very limited options of saving her.Even his close friend turns out to be a traitor. His only hope lies in a fake tantric (Umashree) and another ghost (Rangayana Raghu) who can teach him to handle objects. The film is humorous and touching at the same time.
How Shyam's ghost manages to save his wife's life and what it does with the money forms an interesting second half of the film. Umashree has given a brilliant performance and her comedy timing is exceptional. The film is not filled with scary ghosts and is suitable for youngsters as well. The Censor Board has give it an U/A certificate. Vishaka Singh and newcomer Rohan Gowda, had they been a little better would have added extra punch to the film. Mithun, Rangayana Raghu and Harish Roy have performed suitably.
In the middle of an engaging watch the songs seem intrusive. But since they are good in themselves do not bother much. The background sound is noisy at times but overall compliments the movie. The fast screenplay is supported by the crisp editing. Antharatma is an entertaining film and deserves a watch for its innovative approach.
